Why Is My Dog Shaking Their Head?

Frequent head shaking in dogs often signals ear irritation, infection, allergies, moisture, parasites, foreign objects, excess wax, or an ear hematoma. More serious causes include middle- or inner-ear disease and neurological problems.

Pet parents should gently inspect the ears, keep them dry, use only veterinarian-approved cleaners, and avoid cotton swabs, peroxide, alcohol, essential oils, and human medications. Veterinary care is recommended when shaking persists or occurs with odor, discharge, redness, pain, swelling, head tilt, balance problems, vomiting, facial drooping, seizures, or lethargy. Early treatment can prevent worsening pain, hearing problems, and permanent ear damage.
